Frequently asked questions

General questions

What is w8track?

w8track is a service that provides incredibly simple weight tracking and charting. It’s ideal for people on a diet, who are trying to gain or lose weight, or who are monitoring health or medical conditions. It automatically computes 7-day and 30-day moving averages from the weight records you provide, allowing you to focus on trends in your weight and reduce the emphasis on normal day-to-day weight fluctuations.

Free accounts are available to everyone!

How easy is w8track to use?

w8track is as easy as following three simple steps:

  1. Sign in using your OpenID. If you have an account with Yahoo!, Google, or many other Internet service providers, you already have an OpenID. After you sign into w8track for the first time, an account will be created for your OpenID automatically.

Note: Use the same OpenID every time you return to w8track, or we won’t remember you!

  2. Record your weight. Once you’ve signed in, use one of the New Weight buttons to record your weight for today or some other day. Once you’ve record your weight for more than one day, you’ll see a line chart of your weight as well as 7-day and 30-day averages. The chart and the averages are updated every time you record a new weight.
  3. Repeat. That’s all there is to it! Come back every time you weigh yourself and repeat steps 1 and 2.

Which units can I use to record my weight?

w8track allows you to record your weight in pounds, kilograms, or stones. No matter which units you use to record your weight, the weight will be converted to your default units for charting and computing averages. This feature is handy if you’re traveling overseas, recording your weight in units you’re not familiar with!

How long does w8track you keep my records?

w8track allows you to record your weight once every day for the last 90 days with your free account. And you’ll be able to see your record from the last 90 days every time you come back. You won’t be able to edit a record that leaves the 90-day rolling window, but it’ll still be used for computing averages. Records that are no longer necessary for computations will be expunged periodically.

Technical questions

Which browsers does w8track support?

w8track has been tested extensively with the latest version of Firefox, but it should also work well with the latest versions of Safari, Google Chrome, and the ubiquitous Internet Explorer. Because of the differences in browser behavior, w8track may appear a bit different in each browser.

Future plans

Is w8track planning any new free features?

w8track was released without a feature to change the default units of weight. It will be fixed soon. Until then, charts and computed averages will be expressed in pounds, even though you also can record your weight in kilograms or stones.

Will w8track offer any premium features in the future?

w8track is looking into premium features such as an extended rolling window for weight records, enhanced charting, and a text message interface for recording weight. No definitive plans have been made, but if these features are offered, they will likely be part of a paid subscription at a nominal monthly fee.

Other questions

Why was w8track created?

w8track was created by a web developer who found himself with a great deal of free time after a major contract was terminated on short notice. Living in Phoenix in February, he found the weather suitable for hiking in the urban mountains almost every day. As a result, he realized he was losing weight rather quickly. After years of tracking his weight with paper and pen, he wanted a better way to record his weight and, more importantly, view its trends. A couple weeks later, w8track was born.

Why did w8track choose OpenID?

w8track chose OpenID as its method of authentication because its developer wanted to make the application accessible to millions of Internet users without forcing each of them through a new signup. By using OpenID, w8track can keep itself out of the business of creating and managing individual identities and focus on its core function of recording, computing, and charting weight.
